Goals for 2013!

2 Jan

2013-GoalsHappy 2013 Everyone! Last week I posted about the 20 things I am most thankful for in 2012, so I thought I would follow up today with my goals for 2013. I am not making any “resolutions” because I feel like resolutions set you up for failure. The definition for the “resolution” I am referring to is:

New Years Resolution : a resolve or determination, to make a firm resolution to do something.

The problem I see with this is that we are not perfect. When people make new years resolutions, and after a few weeks they “fail” at reaching their resolve, they usually give up with the excuse of starting again next year. There is no reason you have to wait until NEXT YEAR to accomplish something you wanted to THIS YEAR! Does that make any sense? Now lets look at the definition of a goal.

Goal : the result or achievement toward which effort is directed; aim; end.
This sounds much better to me, and less stressful. You have to allow yourself some wiggle room to achieve your goals, otherwise anytime you slip up, you will allow yourself to continue to slip up because you already failed at your resolution. I like goals because even if I slip up one day, I can dust myself off and get back to it, without stressing too much about getting off track. So, without further ado here are my goals for 2013!
  1. Run a 5k. This is a big deal for me because I am not a runner. I have never enjoyed it, and I still don’t but I want to challenge myself to do something this year that I normally wouldn’t.
  2. Participate in a mud run. This is also a 5K, and I am not so much concerned about running the whole thing as I am excited about the experience and trying this with some of my girlfriends. It’s coming up soon in San Diego, it’s the Dirty Girl Mud Run. Check it out in a city near you!
  3. Save $$ towards becoming a certified Pilates instructor. The instructor course I want to take costs $4,000. The reason it’s so much is its a Pilates Apparatus training course, so it encompasses all of the Pilates equipment. By having this particular certification, I will be more desirable to different studios and would be able to find teaching work more easily. I would love to do the certification this year, but with the wedding, I don’t think I will be able to come up with this money right away.
  4. Get my real estate license. I took the test a year ago and never paid for the license. I have to pay for the license this year otherwise all the work I did to pass the test and all the classes I took will be useless. I don’t plan on selling real estate, at least not at this point, but it would be silly not to get my license now which will cost me about $250.
  5. Lose the last 15 pounds. I am putting this down because it’s more of a finite goal, but really I would be happy just getting more toned. I feel like I will lose pounds of fat, but replace it with muscle, so if I do not reach this pound goal, I will not be too crushed. I want to look fantastic in my wedding dress, and most important I want to feel fantastic!
  6. Improve my weightlifting skills. I would like to be able to curl 20lbs on each arm by the end of the year, do at least 2 pull ups and squat 200lbs. I want to be able to see muscle tone.
  7. Drink more H2O. My goal this year is to drink 100 ounces of water every day!
  8. Read more! I want to read one new book every month. 12 books by the end of the year. Currently I am ready 50 shades of Grey. Next on my list is Safe Haven (My fiance bought me this book for Christmas).

I am sure there are more goals that I have, and I may revise this post later on down the road, but for now these will be keeping me very busy!! Have you set any goals for yourself for 2013? Comment below and share!

20 things I am thankful for! 2012 Edition.

My dancers from the Mesa College Spring 2012 Concert. Me in the middle. πŸ™‚

The new year is almost upon us, and so today I thought I would take a moment and talk about 20 things that I am thankful for over the past year! While most people are making their goals for 2013, I thought it was important to reflect and thank the people who have made a difference in my life. This was also a challenge for the #elf4health challenge group on Twitter, so I thought it would be a perfect blog post. It’s helped to really get my brain working again, and I am going to make much more of an effort to contribute to my blog in 2013. That is one of my resolutions. In my next post, I will talk in more detail about my goals and hopes for 2013! There are many exciting things to come, mainly my wedding in May, so I am just looking forward to saying goodbye to all the great things that have happened in 2012 and move onto new adventures!

Here are the 20 things I am thankful for in 2012! (And in life).

  1. My determination – Recently I have been really determined to live a healthier life. Although over the holidays I have to admit I have not been the most healthy, but I am more conscious about what I am eating, and how I am treating my body. I am so proud of myself for asking for a gym bag, workout clothes and Pilates classes for Christmas!
  2. My fiance – Without him, I would definitely not be where I am today! He gave me the courage to pursue a new career which I am much happier at, and of course he asked me to spend the rest of my life with him. πŸ™‚ He has always been supportive of me.
  3. My family – My family has been growing now that I have Brad’s family too, and my best friend is having a baby! They have also all been very supportive and Brad’s family has welcomed me with open arms. I have to say it’s very nice to have in-laws you can get along with. πŸ™‚
  4. Fitness – this is a big one for me. I used to be so active without even thinking about it, and then I got a desk job and gained weight. I learned I have to make fitness a part of my life, and I plan eventually to become a certified Pilates instructor and maybe personal trainer.
  5. Heath – I am so thankful to be overall healthy and to have a healthy family.
  6. Clean water – We as Americans don’t think much about the many blessings we have. Water is so important to life, and I am thankful that I can go and get water whenever I want.
  7. My job – I really do enjoy my job, I get to write and edit all day, and come up with all of our social media strategies. It also doesn’t hurt that I get to travel too!
  8. My travels – Even though it is tiring to travel for business, I am just thankful that I work someplace that gives me the opportunity to leave my desk set up every once in a while. I can’t complain much when I am editing on a balcony overlooking the ocean in Puerto Vallarta Mexico. Even though I am working, I know I am blessed to have the opportunity.
  9. My manager – They know that I work hard everyday, and so they keep giving me more and more responsibilities. Now I am fully in charge of our 2 separate quarterly newsletters. Editor in chief if you will. πŸ™‚ I have always wanted to be a writer, but dance always came first. Now I know I can make a living writing and still dance on the side. πŸ™‚
  10. Dance – even though I am not currently taking classes because of work and wedding planning, I still dance everyday in my heart or when I hear a good song I begin to choreograph. It’s a great stress reliever.
  11. My pets – I don’t know what I would have done without my cat Beau. He helped me through a lot of hard times. Now my fiance and I have Luna that we adopted for Christmas last year. She is my little princess and she always makes me smile.
  12. My home – I am thankful that, even though we live in San Diego which is crazy expensive, Brad and I are able to have a nice little place of our own to call home for now. It’s an apartment but we will find a permanent home at some point.
  13. Bananas – If it weren’t for banana’s I wouldn’t eat very healthy haha. I put bananas in almost everything I make without sugar because it sweetens it up a lot!
  14. Twitter – I am so thankful for twitter and the community of other lifestyle and health bloggers out there. There are people that are much more active on their blogs than I am, and it inspires me to keep going. They provide me so much motivation especially the @blogilates and @toneitup communities. You can find me on Twitter @stephaniesaum although I will be changing that after I get married!
  15. Close friends – I am so thankful for all of my friends that have been there for me along the way. Getting engaged is extremely exciting and it’s nice to have support in the planning process.
  16. My legs – thank goodness I have them and they work. Otherwise dancing would be a challenge.
  17. Living in San Diego – I know I am lucky to live in “America’s finest city” and many people would kill to live here because of the weather, but there potentially may be a move in a few years to another city to see if we can survive there haha. I mean the cost of living here is outragous compared to our wages. If it wasn’t for Brad I would barely afford my 1 bedroom apartment on my full time salary. But I am thankful I am here now. πŸ™‚
  18. Colored pens – They help me keep my life so organized. I color code every little event. πŸ™‚
  19. My planner – Same thing as the pens. I would go crazy without it, because with all of this wedding stuff going on, my head feels like it’s about to pop off.
  20. Anyone who reads my blog. – It really means a lot to me that anyone would take the time to read what I have to say, so thank you so much from the bottom of my heart. I hope I entertain you at least in some way.

Okay, it took me all day to finish writing this post. My problem is I keep starting these really great posts, and never finish them because I have so many things going on in my world at the moment. I think I will be extremely glad when wedding planning is over because even though it seems glamorous, its very stressful when you don’t have a wedding planner and you are doing it all on your own!

What things are you most thankful for?

Life has been a little crazy & Engagement Photo Sneak Peak!

25 Oct

Hey everyone!

I realize it’s been a while since I have updated my blog! Last week I was in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico for work. It was an annual members meeting, and I had to be there all week with very limited WIFI access. Also, the three weeks before that were so hectic I had no time to even think about anything else but work unfortunately.

I know it sounds super glamorous to be in Puerto Vallarta for work, but I didn’t even get to put my feet in the sand. I can’t complain too much because the view from my “office” last week (i mean my balcony) was stunning. I did get bit on my feet by some sort of bugs (not mosquitoes) and my feet swelled up really bad, I actually had to see the hotel doctor, but other than that I had fun meeting the members that I talk to every day through email and our social media platforms.

This Tuesday, my future hubby and I took our Engagement Pictures (finally) and I received a few sneak peak pictures from the photographers. So far, I am loving what I see! The photographers were referred to me by a girl I used to work with, and they were professional and creative. I think the work speaks for itself. I wanted to share with you a few of the photo’s we have so far, and maybe it will give you a few ideas for your own pictures in the future (not necessarily engagement pics).

I hope you enjoy them! Thanks for reading my blog, I really appreciate every one of you!

My Bi-Polar Workout Schedule

25 Sep

Life BeginsSo if you have been following my blog for a while, you will notice that I have not been able to stick with the P90x program. I am not sure what it is about that program. I love lifting weights, but the cardio is a drag, and the yoga is terrible (in my opinion). So, in response to this I realized that I had to do something, and fast. My wedding is just about 7 months away now. I remember thinking β€œI have 12 months it’s no problem, I can lose these last 15 pounds”. Yea well in the last 5 months, I have lost none. I have shaped up a bit, and then fell into a pit again. So I decided I need to do something shorter term, just for 1 month and really stick with it and follow the program. I decided to whip out my Brazil Butt Lift DVDs from the back of my workout drawer. Yesterday was Day 1 β€œBum Bum” and yes it kicked my ass. Even though the workouts are shorter, I feel they burn a lot of calories because you are targeting larger muscle groups.

I want to apologize to any of my readers out there, because my blog may not be super inspirational. But hopefully you see me as a real person, with real problems and the same excuses a lot of people come up with. I know I make excuses not to workout or eat my healthiest, and I am trying really hard to change my ways but I think that’s the hardest part. Once I can get past the mental road blocks, I know I will achieve great things.

So I am committing to the BBL 30 day program (for pear shapes) and I am going to try to be more consistent with my healthy eating. How do you motivate yourself to get back on track when you feel you keep losing your way?

How iOS6 is going to streamline my life!

18 Sep

Can I get a bit nerdy today? πŸ™‚ I cannot wait for the iOS6 upgrade to be released tomorrow. If you haven’t heard anything about it, then you obviously aren’t as completely unhealthily obsessed with your iPhone as I am…and that’s probably a good thing. I was literally watching live blog updates for the 2 hours that the iPhone5 and iOS6 were being announced.

It’s a little embarrassing but man, I love my apple gadgets. I am going to do my best to explain some of the newest features of the new software upgrade, and I will try to inform you which of your phones will have what features. (In true apple fashion, some of the older phone models won’t really benefit much from this software upgrade). The funny thing is that I am not super excited about the new iPhone 5 even though it’s a little bigger and faster, I will wait until May when I get my upgrade. I won’t be paying full price for it. πŸ˜‰

Here is a round up of the best features that the iOS6 software has to offer!

  • Maps- The Maps app is getting a complete overhaul because it is no longer GoogleMaps powered (just like the YouTube app will not be integrated in the software anymore). You can view the maps in 3D and see a flyover of your city (works only in major cities currently). One of the most incredible new features is the Turn-by-Turn navigation! I know apple is behind on this software because there are other phones that offer this, but this will be a huge help to us Apple obsessed folks out there that live on our iPhones and sometimes get lost trying to read the directions from the screen. (Only avail. on iPhone 4s and 5).
  • Siri gets an upgrade-Again this update will only be for iPhone 4s and 5, and iPad 3rd generation, but Siri can now be told what to do, without even holding down the Home button. This will allow you to ask Siri to perform certain tasks much easier. Also, she will know more sports scores/movie times and can make dinner reservations because OpenTable is now integrated into the software.
  • Facebook – If you are a Social Media-aholic like me, this is going to be fun for you! Just like Twitter has been integrated into the iPhone software, now Facebook will be integrated too. Now you can ask Siri to post a Facebook status update for you, or more easily post that picture you just took to your Facebook Timeline.
  • Shared Photo Streams – Now this is cool! Now when I take a picture of my adorable puppy, I don’t have to text it to my fiance, I can just share it with him in a stream, and it will just pop up on his phone! (Note, they have to be using iOS6 too). Then he can like and comment on that picture directly in the photo stream. This will make sharing photos with your family and friends much easier.
  • Passbook – I am a little unclear on this one still, but looks to be one app that you can save all of your grocery store rewards cards, coupons and airline/movie tickets in one place. Then it can just be scanned right from your phone, this will clear out a lot of our wallets!!
  • Facetime over Cellular!-FINALLY I can Facetime chat with my fiance or mom without having to be connected to WIFI! We are not always connected to WIFI, and whats the point of video chatting if we are in the same place :P. Now when I am on the go, I can visually see what my family is up to! *stalker alert* lol!
  • Phone – Now I can remind myself to call people back! Yay! In my busy life, I hardly ever remember to call people back. Now, right from the phone app, when someone is calling you, you can set a call back reminder. You can also text them right away if you’re in a meeting or something, and let them know you will call them back. You can use a standard text, or write your own. It’s the little things that count.
  • Mail – New VIP lists will allow you to look at only the most important emails first. Who likes sorting through all of those coupons and store sales emails to find the one from your brother confirming lunch the next day, etc. I don’t.

There are over 200 new features that will be coming with this new upgrade tomorrow and obviously I will not be talking about all of them, but hopefully this gives you a bit of insight into what to expect, and one girls opinions on the features! To find out more about this upgrade, visit the Apple iOS6 info page.

Reevaluating my goals and getting back on track. Part 2.

17 Sep

I realized I never posted the second half of my goals post from over a month ago! It’s really crazy how quickly time can pass, and how things can spiral out of control!

As of September 4th, I had 8 months to go until my wedding day. Because my wedding is a huge motivator for me to get in shape, I have decided to create an 8 month game-plan for myself. All of the workouts I am using are home workout DVD’s from Beachbody. (Note: I am not a beach body coach, I am not here to force anything on you or sell you products or anything). I have used the different Beachbody programs because I find that they work pretty well, and I can do them from home. Because I work full time and am in a Dance Company and am trying to get a Freelance Writing career going, I barely have time to make it to the gym, and I can’t afford it, which is why I choose to work out from home.

My current weight is 140lbs (I gained a few pounds since ending Insanity and starting P90X…I am hoping it’s muscle tone). Ultimately I would like to weigh 125lbs in the next 8 months. That is just 15lbs in 8 months. I am not trying to crash diet or lose weight quickly because I want to change my lifestyle, along with the lifestyle of my future husband. I have been cooking clean recently in an effort to make our bodies healthier on the inside, and help us shed some pounds on the outside. My favorite thing about eating Clean for the most part, is it’s easy. I made some Turkey Tacos the other night which took only about 15 mins! There is one blog in particular that I return to again and again to get recipes.

  • www.TheGraciousPantry.com This site is amazing! I want to give a shout out to it’s writer and creator Tiffany! She is really inspirational and is helping me change my outlook on cooking and eating better.

Since I started P90X month 2 on Monday Sept 10th, I should be finishing up on November 4th. Once I finish P90X I am going to do 1 month of Brazil Butt Lift to tone up my lower body and sculpt it into what I envision it looking like. πŸ˜‰ Once I finish that up, I plan to do a P90X/BBL/Insanity hybrid leading up to a few weeks before my wedding! My hopes is that in these next few months I build up muscle mass where I need it, and start to burn more calories and fat! Yay! Hopefully this helps motivate you to make your own weight loss or fitness goals!

Share your goals with me in the comments!

P90X Month 2 : Feels good!

11 Sep

I have to preface this post by saying that I will not be posting before and after month 1 pictures, because month 1 took me about 2 months to complete, and even then I didn’t stick with it consistently. I decided to move onto month two because even if I am not perfectly following the program, I know that I will still see results. This is pretty much the first time in my life that I have lifted weights for a consistent period of time and I am so proud of the progress I have made so far!

I feel muscles forming in my arms, chest shoulders and thighs, and I am really excited to see what will happen this month. I know I may not finish month 2 perfectly, but I have made a commitment to myself to try to stick with it as much as possible. To really push myself. Yesterday for example, I took a long lunch and went home and did the first workout for this month (Chest/Shoulders and Arms…and Ab Ripper X). I could not even finish the first workout, I made it with about 10 mins to spare but I was pushing my muscles to where they literally couldn’t do anymore. One armed pushups??? Not even on my knees, ha! And those fast and slow motion pushups really did a number on me. The result? Noodle arms today. It’s literally a struggle to type this blog post up. πŸ™‚

I have my engagement photo shoot coming up at the end of this month, and I am not expecting miracles but I would like to feel tight when that shoot happens (even if others can’t tell my muscles are getting tighter). Another thing that I discovered I enjoy is Hiking. Last week, a girlfriend of mine from high school and I hiked up Cowles Mountain, which is a local hike here in San Diego. It’s 1.5 miles to the top and a 950 foot change in elevation. It’s definitely not an easy hike, so I was super happy with the fact that I made it to the top!!! The elevation is 1,593 and is the highest point in San Diego with 360 degree panoramic views of my beautiful city. I have lived within a few miles of Cowles Mountain for a few years and am very surprised that I have never attempted this hike before.

Luna was telling mom and dad she was ready to go back home.

We thought we had made it much further, but we were only about 1/4 of the way up at this point.

At the peak of Cowles Mountain. You have to touch this sign, otherwise you didn’t make it. πŸ™‚ In my excitement, I forgot to read the sign.

I feel really accomplished because I know that 6 months ago, there is no way I would have ever made it to the top of this mountain. My friend and I plan to hike every weekend now, and I think it will be so great for us. We are going to Cowles again, but there are multiple tails around Cowles that we can try as well. Looking forward to updating you all after my next adventure!

Who is doing P90X right now?
