5 tips to help you get fit for the wedding! (Or for anything)

23 Jan

Hey Everyone!

This post is a bit of a wedding update + some tips and tricks that have been helping me get in shape for my wedding. I want to start out by saying that I have not really lost any weight at all in the last 6 months. It’s definitely been frustrating because since November in particular, I have been working out at least 4 times a week and counting my calories (with cheats here and there). One thing I want to say is that the scale is NOT YOUR FRIEND. As a woman, it’s so hard to stay away from that thing because we are so conditioned to think that our weight determines how healthy/skinny we are.

My wedding is just over 3 months away, and my first fitting is in a month and a half, so I am sure you can imagine that I have been feeling like its crunch time at the gym. Finally Brad started going to the gym with me, and we have made Friday nights a Gym/Date night. We used to go out and eat and get beer, now we sweat it out at the gym together and then wind down with a movie. Although the scale has not moved, I tried my wedding dress on last weekend when I was shopping for accessories, and I felt even more beautiful than I did when I bought it.

Here are some of the changes that I have seen in my body:

  • My arms are a bit thinner and showing a tiny bit of definition. Still have work to do though.
  • My waist and the area around my ribs are significantly leaner!
  • My hips and butt are a little narrower. My slip was a bit tight on my hips but this time it zipped up with no problem!
  • My back fat is diminishing. YAY!
  • My breast bone and collar bones are starting to show. This is the biggest thing for me because it makes my chest look more lifted and what woman doesn’t love that!

I still have some time to get even more fit, but I am so happy with the progress. Now, I want to share with you my advice for getting into wedding day shape.

  • Count calories -to an extent. I was getting a little too crazy with my calorie counting and I think that MyFitnessPal was under calculating my calories. Now I am trying just to eat right but not feel bad about having an extra tbsp of hummus.
  • Lift weights – when I stopped focusing all on cardio and started lifting weights two things happened: 1. I didn’t hate going to the gym (I hate cardio) and 2. My body started looking different!
  • Get your man in on the action – My fiancé is going to school for a BA in Kinesiology option as a Fitness Specialist. He has a passion for fitness and he kind of fell off the bandwagon with me, so I think he has been having fun “personal training” me and coming up with a fitness regimen. We weight lift together and then I add in a bit of cardio and 2 days of Pilates too.
  • Share your goals with your friends and family – This is a way to stay on track because we all know people are going to pressure you to have seconds or have another beer. If you are upfront with your friends and family about wanting to eat healthier, they will support you and make it easier. My mom has even been going to the gym with me!
  • Don’t order your dress a size or two too small! – It was recommended to me to order my dress in a 10 but I ordered an 8. This worked out okay for me because the 8 fit my body as it was when I ordered it, and now that I have toned up I have the gratification of getting it taken in! The last thing you want is to get a dress too small and not make your weight loss goal and have that stress 6 weeks before your wedding when it doesn’t fit!

I hope my tips will help you reach your goals. Most of all, don’t stress too much. Your fiancé asked you to marry him just the way you are so believe that you are beautiful no matter what!

Do you have any tips for getting in shape for the wedding?

I am getting Married in June, and have been having trouble as well. I started with about 10 pounds to lose and in the year we have been engaged I gained another 10. So frustrating when I run 20 miles a week and that scale doesn’t budge! Especially when I feel like I am missing out on all the good beer and food I love. I tried weight watchers and was vigilant for over a month and lost one pound. Was so mad I gave up….
In the last month I have lost 7 pounds doing meal replacement shakes ( 1-2 a day) and a lean protein and vegetable for dinner. One thing I love to do is watch the biggest loser! It keeps me motivated if they can do it I can do it too! I just keep picturing my great bod on the beach in Hawaii after the wedding! Also if your at the gym enter your time in the machine… then it creates a countdown– helps me a lot … Changes my mindset from “Ive only been on this thing for 10 minutes!!”… to “I only have 10..15..20… etc to go…”. Sounds really simple… but for me it helps a lot! Best of luck!

      Hi Melanie,

Sorry I never replied sooner, I thought I had. This week I started doing a 7 Day Slim Down. I am basically cutting out most salt (you obviously need some salt daily to function) and sugar and starchy carbs. I am at 143 lbs right now, and have had trouble breaking into the 130s so I am hoping that this week I will be able to do that, even 139lbs would be great!

I wish you all the best in your upcoming June wedding. If you want to check out what I am doing for my Slim Down, visit http://www.ToneItUpPlan.com

  2. Try to eat 5 or 6 small meals throughout the day
rather than 3 large meals. A huge mistake people make when dieting is to starve themselves.

Alcohol will also cause you to crave fatty, sugary junk foods – anyone who’s ever had the desire to consume burgers, kebabs or a big fry-up after a night out will attest to this fact.
