She believed she could, and so she did.

Life is tough in general, and believe me…I have hit my share of rough patches. Today I was inspired to write this blog post, because of a post the ToneItUp girls made this morning. I started my health and wellness journey years ago, in college. I am a dancer, and got a BA in dance in 2009 🙂 But as a dance major, it was really a struggle with body image. I studied ballet and modern dance, and even though I was not a “big girl”, I felt like one compared to other girls in my classes that were 5’9 had legs for days and weighed probably 115lbs! (I was 5’3 125-130 lbs and had the lower body of a hip hop dancer…thick thighs and butt). I have since come to the realization that I will not ever be stick thin because that’s just not how I am made, and actually I am happy to have a little extra meat on my bones. 🙂

However, after I graduated college the weight packed on. I was no longer dancing 6 hours a day, instead I was sitting behind a desk for 8 hours a day, and dancing maybe 3 hours a week 😦 I quickly realized that dance was not going to pay my bills, especially since I love to perform, and I am not big on teaching little kids which is where most of the money is. By early 2011 I weighed about 155lbs, and was not happy with my appearance. My fiance (then boyfriend) was so supportive and will always love me as I am, and he really helped me build confidence in myself and feel proud of my body.

It took a while for me to make any changes, but in the summer of 2011 I decided I had to treat my body with more respect if I ever wanted to be healthy and have a high endurance again. I was taking dance classes, but was getting winded really quickly and I knew that something had to change.

I started to replace one meal a day with a vegan protein shake, and that helped me drop from 155lbs to 143lbs which I stayed at for a while. This April, my best friend asked me to marry him, and we are planning a wedding for June 2013! I have so much motivation now to get healthy, not just so I look super hot in my wedding dress, but also so I can start my married life on a healthy foot. And if we plan to have children soon, I want to be knowledgeable so I can teach my kids proper eating habits, and they can grow up healthy and confident. Other amazing things have been happening to me since I changed my mindset. I got an amazing new job as a Social Media Specialist in the travel/tourism industry which allows me to travel a bit, I got my own apartment with my Fiance, and now I am planning a wedding. I started INSANITY on May 1, and started eating clean on May 13th and I have high hopes for whats to come! I am already down to 141lbs, and my goal is to be under 120lbs by next April! I can do it! We all can do it, as long as we truly put our minds to it. It’s like that quote I once heard…”She believed she could, and so she did.” That is my new mantra! I hope this story helps to enlighten you and give you hope for a more positive future!
